In "DWIs give new meaning to last call" (April 13, 2007), the writer manages to blame every possible local entity for drunk driving except the source: drunken students. In a delusional rant that depicts drunken UB students as victims, she blames a bankrupt city for not providing efficient transportation in the wee hours of the night, the Buffalo police force for doing its job to protect the citizenry against irresponsible and reckless drunken driving, and UB for not subsidizing cab rides for partiers (because, obviously, that money would not be better spent on education).
In reality, the responsibility to get home safely rests on the individual who has spent all night partying. The claim that "no college student in the world has [enough] cash to throw around every Thursday night for transportation" is not an excuse for driving home drunk. To go out partying without planning how to get home safely is profoundly irresponsible and stupid; it is unconscionable that the writer would make excuses for engaging in an activity that injures and kills thousands of innocent people annually. If you cannot afford to get your drunken self home without risking the lives of area residents, maybe you should not be out partying every weekend.
