Kourtney off the court

What can Brown do for you?

If the brown you are referring to is freshman forward Kourtney Brown of the women's basketball team, the answer isn't getting a package delivered over night. Though she has certainly delivered for the women's basketball team this season.

Despite this being her first collegiate season, Brown has started 17 games, and is averaging just over seven points and four rebounds per game. Brown also leads the team with 26 blocks on the season.

The six-foot tall baller is not all about hoops though. When she's not on the court, Brown says it's very easy to find her. Just look for the nearest computer.

"Every time I'm not on the court or doing homework I'm on the computer," Brown said. "I like to play around on the computer. I like to make games."

Coming to Buffalo from Solon, Ohio was not a huge adjustment for Brown, as she has family in Buffalo, and head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald has been there to help.

"It's not that bad. We really learned a lot about time management and coach really makes sure that we do everything in time and she checks to make sure that we're doing well in everything," Brown said. "This is like home away from home for me because my mom is from here, I have a lot of family up here."

However, there is one thing that even Hill-MacDonald has not been able to fix.

When asked about her biggest problem in school, Brown answered, "Probably getting up and going to classes on my own. Not having my parents to wake me up in the morning and making sure I get everything done."

As a senior in high school, Brown averaged 18 points and just fewer than 10 rebounds per game. As the captain of her Solon High School team, she led the Comets to the state championship game. During her final season, Brown was named to the All-County, All-District and All-Conference first teams, as well as being named to the All-State second team.

"In high school basketball you maybe have one or two people on a team that are really good," Brown said. "Here everyone's good. Everyone works with each other a lot better than high school and that's a big difference."

Despite facing tougher competition, Brown has acquitted her self well to the collegiate level. In her first career game, against Canisius, Brown started and poured in 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. After going through a stretch in which she did not score in double-digits for seven straight games, Brown has now scored at least 10 points in seven of her last 10 games. Her best game of the season came against Miami (Ohio), where she scored 16 points on 7-8 shooting, blocked four shots and brought down nine rebounds.

Though she is soft spoken, Brown has found no trouble making friends moving from the Buckeye state to Buffalo.

"My teammates are real cool," Brown said. "It's real fun that I've made new friends on the team and just hanging out with everybody."

Growing up, one person that pushed Brown into participating in sports was her father, who was an athlete himself growing up.

"My dad, he played a lot of sports when he was younger and he really encouraged me to play sports," Brown said. "He's always there to tell me and encourage me at the same time and tell me what I need to do."

Brown also has been able to take lessons that she learned from the basketball court and apply it to her own personal life.

"(I've learned) to let things go," Brown said. "I get upset on the court when I miss free throws. It's the same thing in school when I get a bad grade. I need to understand that I make it up on defense or I can make it up in school."

Though she has at least three more years in school, Brown is already looking towards the future and what she sees for herself after basketball.

"I'd like to get my degree in computer engineering, work for a big computer place like Microsoft, but for now I'd like to just keep winning," Brown said.
