Despite strong individual performances, both the men's and women's swimming teams suffered losses that set them back in the Mid-American Conference standings. The men lost its dual meet with Miami (Ohio), 142 to 98, and the women fell to Bowling Green, 181-119.
Freshman diver Meili Carpenter led the women's team (0-6, 2-6 MAC) winning both the diving events, as she won the one-meter event with a score of 282.23 and dominated in the three-meter event, earning a score of 301.35.
Senior Kahla Walkinshaw had a convincing victory in the 200-yard butterfly, producing a time of 2:07.41. Walkinshaw touched the wall almost three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the sprint event.
Freshman Caitlin Reilly scored a season-best in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing second in a time of 2:07.71, while senior Danielle Gervais grabbed a season-best in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall second in a time of 2:26.51.
On the flip side, the Buffalo men (3-2, 0-2 MAC) were able to win six of the 13 events, but couldn't put together a win.
Freshman diver Michael McDowell led the Bulls with two individual victories on the board. McDowell took the one-meter diving event with a score of 287.02 and won the three-meter board event with a score of 292.65.
The Bulls got off to a fast start, as they earned wins in the first two events of the meet. The 400-yard medley relay team of freshmen Andrew Tamchyna and Jordan Matthews and sophomores Kevin Schuster and Zach Ruske touched the wall first in a time of 3:32.87
Other wins came in the 500-yard freestyle as senior Luke Adams and freshman Connor Vander Zalm turned in a one-two finish, as Adams won the event in 4:42.75 while Vander Zalm touched the wall second in a time of 4:48.33
The women and men both return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 27 with a MAC meet against Eastern Michigan. The meet is set for 1 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
