Love, war and tragedy combine to inspire many Shakespearean tales, but this weekend they unite to form the story of a country's revolution. Jose Rizal, who inspired a nation to rise up against subjugation, is the center focus of this weekend's Barrio Fiesta.
The Filipino American Student Association's 11th Annual performance this year focuses on the life of Dr. Jose Rizal, a man who "brought hope and love in a land driven to the brink of chaos." His speeches and writings influenced the people to resist Spanish domination and fight back against oppression.
His novels "Noli me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo" had widespread appeal among the Filipino people who were living with forced labor and deprivation of human rights. Due to the annihilation of the Filipino culture under Spanish occupation, the nation began to fight back.
The play will begin Sat., Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m.
UB student Ralph Cecilio is the scriptwriter for "Rizal," and many of FASA's members will donate their acting talents to the play.
FASA consists of over 40 members though not all exclusively from the Philippines.
"We don't exclude anyone, in fact, many of our e-board members are from different backgrounds," said FASA President Carl Begonia. "We have a diverse group of people who make up our club. I'm excited for this weekend because I know it will be amazing."
Also announced is the 2nd Annual Barrio After Party located at the Space Entertainment Complex. The party will continue the celebration of Rizal's life and will continue until 4 a.m.
