Athletes of the week announced
Senior 133-pound wrestler Mark Budd and junior forward Heather Turner were announced as athletes of the week. This is the first time this season for both these athletes to be honored.
Budd won his second consecutive title at the Mat Town USA Tournament. The senior is the Mid-American Conference's top-ranked wrestler in his weight class. He has rolled past his three opponents in the Mat Town tournament, ending it with a 15-6 major decision against B.J. Compton of Old Dominion in the championship match. Budd also captured sixth-place at the Las Vegas Invitational this past weekend which included a 3-1 victory over the fourth nationally-ranked Tyler McCormick of Missouri.
Turner, a junior of the women's basketball team, posted her first double-double of the season when she scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in the Bulls home opener against Holy Cross. She had 12 offensive rebounds in the two games, which included the eight against the Crusaders.
MAC Champion crowned in football
This past Thursday, Dan LeFevour threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns and Damien Linson had 191 yards receiving to help Central Michigan beat Ohio 31-10 in the Mid-American Conference Championship game at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich.
Both teams were making their first appearance in the MAC Championship game, which started in 1997. Central Michigan (9-4) last won the conference title in 1994, while Ohio has not won the championship since 1968.
The Chippewas with the win will return to Ford Field for the Motor City Bowl on Dec. 26, their first bowl game since the 1994 Las Vegas Bowl. Ohio will be in the GMAC Bowl on Jan. 7. This is the Bobcats first bowl game since the 1968 Tangerine Bowl.
