It's been a while since punk has offered something new, but with "Moment of Uncertainty" The Vores show that they are willing to bare their teeth.
The Buffalo band's sound is reminiscent of The Editors, and earlier bands like Television and Talking Heads. They could even be compared to The Killers, although The Vores' sound is more minimalist and sparse. Despite obvious punk and indie influences, the band has clearly been swayed by rock and even country.
The band employs a raw guitar sound on the majority of the tracks to create some memorable and catchy riffs.
On "Heartbeat," the guitar is put front and center with a riff that is both harsh and enticing. "Dark Outside" is catchy, with the lyrics bouncing over the pulsing chords, creating an effect similar to the deranged clattering of The Violent Femmes.
The band is also capable of playing quieter, more melodic tracks like "Twisted Mind." The strumming guitars draw emphasis back to the vocals.
The only flaw is that often the instruments overpower the lyrics. The balance is restored here and there, and once the vocals are given the space to unwind, the real potential of the band is revealed.
While other bands remain static, The Vores are unafraid to be innovative, making "Moment of Uncertainty" a springboard for forthcoming achievements.
