Buffalo swimmers open season

The men and women's swimming teams both opened their seasons this weekend. Both teams faced off against Ball State on Friday. The Buffalo men's squad defeated the Cardinals, 137-106. The women's team struggled and lost to their Mid-American Conference foe 155-88.

The men's team (1-0) won eight of the 13 events with six Bulls winning events, and Buffalo was able to sweep both relay races. The Bulls were led by the freshmen class, who secured five wins for the team.

Leading the team was freshman Connor Vander Zalm, who took first-place in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:48.16. Freshman Scott Woster won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.86. Buffalo also won the 400-yard relay in a time of 3:12.42 and the 400-yard medley relay in 3:35.94.

The women's team was only able to have success in three out of the 13 races. The diving board is where the Buffalo women's team did most of its damage as freshman Meili Carpenter took both of the diving events for Buffalo, scoring 262.5 in the 1M competition and 271.43 in the 3M event.

The women's squad also won the 800 freestyle relay. Buffalo's victorious team consisted of freshmen Kimberly Dale, Jessica Ballard and Emily Day and senior Kahla Walkinshaw, who finished in the time 8:04.52.

The women's team also lost to Miami (Ohio) on Saturday. The Bulls now hold a 0-2 overall record.

Both the women's and men's teams will be back in the pool on Nov. 3, against conference opponent Akron. The Bulls will be on the road to face the Zips at 4 p.m.
