Naughty nurse stereotype hurts women

Letter To The Editor

I do understand that the April 3 issue of The Spectrum is an April Fool's issue and a joke. Naughty nurse images are rarely serious ("Medicine taken orally"). No one seriously thinks that nurses go to their jobs dressed in lingerie and have sex with their patients. However, the hilarity of old stereotypes objectifying a traditionally female profession never gets old. As a nursing student, I was actually surprised that a university publication that I normally enjoy couldn't be more creative.

Nursing is facing a critical shortage, and this shortage has a direct impact on patient care. Continuing to enforce the image of nurses as sex slaves with all the time in the world to bone their patients is detrimental to the recruitment of new nurses and the morale of practicing nurses with a high level of expertise.

The public's view of nursing is already so skewed by inaccurate TV programs like House, Grey's Anatomy and ER, perhaps another profession could take a hit. How about an expos?(c) about engineers sucking d*ck for crack? Or male surgeons having anal sex with their patients when they're under? That would be sexy.
