I can't believe Michael Flatt's opinion column of Feb. 22 ("We pay your salary"). Professors are not your employees (were your elementary school teachers your employees?). They are not your gardener, plumber, or mechanic. They have earned their positions by demonstrating knowledge in their fields. They offer students the opportunity to learn from their experience and they save students the work of "reinventing the wheel" in their specialty.
The amount of knowledge, experience, advice, assistance, and effort they offer you depends on your attitude. Your professors deserve your respect and you need to appreciate your opportunity to be in the university environment. The less you respect your professors, the less incentive they have to bring you their best. The less they give you, the less bang you get for your education buck. You disrespect your professors and you only shoot yourself in the foot.
