Bulls' jumper takes first

Roy Richards won the long jump on Saturday at the EC4A Championships held in Boston, Mass. The victory -- the junior's second first-place finish in as many weeks -- came in the first day of the two-day tournament for the Bulls indoor track team.

Richards won the event in his sixth and final attempt of the day with a jump of 24 feet 5 1/2 inches. Prior to his winning jump, Richards was leading the event with his first jump of 25 feet even.

Buffalo's best jumper knocked out his competitors by a foot as he beat the second-place finisher, Marquis Allen of Rutgers, who leaped 23 feet 5 1/2 inch. In addition to winning a Mid-American Conference title, setting a school record of 24 feet 9 3/4 inches and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA tournament two weeks ago, Richards' win last weekend earned him All-East honors.
