Just next week, the largest Student Association elections since 2003 will be taking place. Poll booths will open in the Student Union and elsewhere on campus, from March 28-30, for students to cast their votes for the new Student Association executive board and SUNY delegate positions.
Unlike in previous years, this election offers a wide variety of candidates outside of the traditional election formula of incumbent contenders versus an opposing nominee. The Progress party, UB Advocates, Have Your SAy and UB Evolved are each bringing important issues to the table.
While they all hope to improve communication between students and administrative officials, each group hopes to advance UB in unique ways. The Progress party focuses on the ideas and needs of the students and reforming the financial system, which would provide need-based funding to student clubs without extra requirements. UB Advocates plans to improve academics by keeping Capen and Health Science Libraries and Clark Hall gym open later for students. They also propose all TAs should be required to take language assessment tests. Have Your SAy plans to focus on the issues of limited parking and additional construction, including finding a permanent home for the new health center on North Campus. UB Evolved also plans on extended library hours and has a plan for increasing corporate funding of SA events
Each party has unique priorities and stances on the issues, so students should carefully consider each ticket. Here is a guide for the presidential tickets. Friday's issue of the Spectrum will offer a quick guide for SUNY SA delegates.
