Transgendered people are not 'self-loathing'

Letter to the Editor

Brian Hibbard's review of the movie "TransAmerica" (Jan. 30) suggests that some transgendered individuals are a "self-loathing abnormality." I can assure you that I am neither self-loathing, nor an abnormality. There are hundreds, thousands of successful transwomen and transmen. We are doctors, lawyers, physics professors, English professors, airplane pilots, blimp pilots, microbiologists, IT experts, actresses, comediennes and journalists. We are You. And we are happily so.

Transgenderism is a medical condition - easily and successfully treated. Yes, that requires surgery for the most part. There are males. There are females. And there are those of us who are obliged to go from one to another. Nothing sinister, nothing sexual, nothing "self-loathing." And I'd also suggest that transgenderism isn't a "taboo subject," as if it is only discussed in dark corners.
