Preseason honors
Junior Yassin Idbihi has been named to the preseason Mid-Major All-American basketball team by collegeinsider.com. Idbihi becomes the second Bull in as many years to be selected for the team as he follows in the footsteps of former UB point guard Turner Battle.
Last season Idbihi was chosen for the All-Mid-American Conference team as he averaged 9.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. In postseason play he was selected for the MAC tournament team after averaging 11.7 points 6.5 rebounds per game. Idhihi is the only player from the MAC that was chosen for this year's team.
In house honors
Juniors Mark Budd and Jenna Map have been chosen as this week's UB athletes of the week.
Budd, of the wrestling team, tallied five wins last Friday on his way to a first-place finish at the Slippery Rock Open. The 133-pounder defeated Sal Lascari of Slippery Rock in the finals of the tournament, which was the first competition for the Bulls this season. Last season Budd finished 26-16 while winning 10 of his last 12 matches. Currently, Budd has won 15 of his last 17 bouts.
Map, of the volleyball team, earned 41 kills with a .243 hitting percentage over the course of two games last weekend. Map had 19 kills in a four-game victory over Akron on Saturday after posting a career-high 22 kills in a five game loss to Toledo on Friday. The junior also had 18 digs against the Zips as she helped her team earn its first-ever win in 18 meetings with Akron.
Looking for a grand
Three UB volleyball players are closing in on the 1,000 mark in two different career statistical categories.
Senior Amy Brown is staring down the four digits in digs with 975, while senior Katie Weekly and junior Nikki Morzenti are chasing the milestone in career kills. Currently, Weekly is at 969 career kills while Morzenti sits at 957.
A new weight with the same success
Harold 'the Cobra' Sherrell of the wrestling team, won his first tournament of the season at heavyweight last weekend as he took the finals in a default victory over teammate Jeff Parker.
Sherrell, a senior and team captain, has wrestled at 184 pounds and 197 pounds for the Bulls in the past, and now, once again, has stepped up his game to fill a hole in the lineup. Last year the senior touted an impressive 22-17 record at 197 pounds while filling in for the then-red-shirt Kyle Cerminara.
Continuing her winning ways
Junior Kahla Walkinshaw is a perfect 3-0 in the 1,000-meter freestyle. Early this season Walkinshaw reached a career-best time against Siena as she finished in 10:32.89. Her individual best also put her at the fifth-best time in the MAC this season.
Walkinshaw and the rest of the Bulls will complete a five-game home stand against Toledo on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
