HEARD IN THE NEWS


"I said to the court before I was jailed that I did not believe I was above the law, and that I would have to go to jail because of my principles."

-- New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who testified Friday in a CIA investigation after serving three months in jail for refusing to reveal a confidential source. Miller said the source telephoned her last week and gave permission to reveal his identity.


"Are you and the players living in such a rarefied atmosphere that you do not see this as a transcendent issue? Don't you get it?"

-- Sen. John McCain, who scolded major league baseball at congressional hearings last week for its steroid policy. McCain specifically blasted Don Fehr, head of the player's union, for his reluctance to accept a tougher policy.


"They must feel vulnerable. They know they have something to hide."

-- Guillermo Luz, one of the many business leaders in the Philippines calling for the resignation of President Gloria Arroyo for allegations of corruption.


"This is a good system. Unfortunately, we get a chance to try it out each summer."

-- Dave Hillman, of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, after a massive and coordinated response allowed firefighters to successfully battle a forest fire that threatened 2,000 homes, but destroyed only two.
