Delight at Dalai Lama's visit

To the Editor

Joy knows no bound as I hear the news that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is going to visit UB by September 2006. I must thank Dr. Dunnett and others for their efforts to make this event a reality. I am sure the visit of a Nobel laureate to this prestigious university will educate students about the true political status of Tibet and the current stand of Tibetan exile government, located in Dharamsala, India.

Dharamsala, for the last several decades, has held the principal of "One China" and it has never aimed at what the Chinese counterpart described as "the splitting of the motherland." Dharamsala is only asking for a genuine autonomous region where Tibetans could practice their religion and preserve culture freely while the external and major affairs are undertaken by Beijing. To be very frank, I personally see this approach as a win-win situation for both the parties.

I am happy that the Beijing side is more receptive nowadays to our exile governments, which is evident from the recent visit of the Dalai Lama's representative to China and Tibet. I am sure there will be a long-term solution for the betterment of Chinese and Tibetan people as a whole.

The responsibility of bringing the Beijing and Dharamsala parties to the same negotiating table should also lies on the Chinese scholars and university students abroad, who actually see the perspective from both sides. It is high time that we should look into the matter genuinely to prevent further catastrophe in near future. May peace prevail on this Earth.
