Candy, carnations and condoms enticed the crowds of students when UB clubs gathered in the main spine to promote their clubs during the fourth annual "Love Your SA Day.
From Knox to the Natural Sciences complex, a menagerie of festive tables lined the hallway Thursday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., each promoting a different club of the Student Association. From sports to ethnic clubs to science clubs, over eighty different groups advertised themselves and their purpose to the student body.
"This is a great way to showcase what the different clubs are all about," said Marc Stellrecht, a senior marketing major who works on internal affairs for the Student Association.
SA Day can be a way to help promote the lesser-known clubs - many prospective club members wandered around the different tables, learning about the varied clubs that the UB student association has to offer.
"It's a great way to get your club out there and help build up your membership," said Michelle Erdman, a senior marketing and international business major, who was heading the table for the Polish SA.
Besides promoting membership, Love Your SA Day is also a good venue for fundraising, according to Linda Hausen, a sophomore English major who is apart of the Irish club. The Irish club is currently sponsoring a contest for a trip to Boston during spring break.
More than just benefiting the club, membership also benefits the individual student, according to Cuthbert Unikute, a junior African American studies and history major who was heading the Community Action Corps table.
"UB is such a large school. Joining a club helps you meet other people and helps make the school a friendlier place," said Cuthbert. "Anyone who claims there's not enough to do should come here and sign up for something."
"Love Your SA Day" is planned to coincide with Valentine's Day, said SA President George Pape, who oversaw the day's activities.
"I hope the students enjoyed the day and learned a bit more about what each of the clubs had to offer," said Pape.
