Local Soccer Rivals Duel to a 0-0 Tie in Double OT

A defensive battle took place on the soccer field at UB on Tuesday night that resulted in double overtime when the Niagara Purple Eagles showed up for their match against the Buffalo Bulls.

Although the game did result in double overtime, neither team was able to capitalized during the extra periods, resulting in a 0-0 tie to end the game.

First half action was end to end with both teams running hard right from the start. Niagara scored a late goal before the end of the half that was called back on an offside call. Little did they know how much that penalty would come back to haunt them in the end.

The half came to an end with both teams recording only one shot a piece.

The Bulls came out hard in the second half recording two shots on goal and keeping steady pressure on the defense of the Purple Eagles. Unfortunately, their scoring opportunities ended up all for naught.

UB showcased their team speed with outstanding performances by Erik Jaanimagi and Andrae Clarke. Both players constantly pushed the ball up the field creating opportunities for their teammates and showing the ability to get back on defense as well.

Mike Geller was another impact player for the Bulls and his presence was felt all over the field, making plays on the offensive and defensive ends of the field. Niagara had a difficult time containing his size and speed.

Geller had an amazing throw in, late in the game, from the corner kick spot in the Niagara end. The throw in almost resulted in the game wining goal as the header was redirected just outside the top right corner of the Niagara net, ending regulation in a scoreless tie.

The teams played two additional ten minute sudden-death overtime periods. Defense was the strong unit in each of the overtime sessions as neither team was able to get a shot on goal and it seemed like both teams had trouble generating any offense. The game ended in a scoreless tie that improves UB's record to 1-3-2 for the season.

The team is gearing up for the Army tournament that takes place this weekend with the first of two games scheduled for Friday night at 7:30 against Army and wrapping up Sunday against Navy at 1.
