Tragedy hit the UB women's crew team this past year as the team lost one of their own in a tragic accident in December. Christine Ann Dickerson, a freshman walk-on to the UB crew team lost her life in a traffic accident on Dec.11, 2002, in Ellicottville, NY.
With the memory of Christine, the team had one of the best seasons in school history, concluding it with a third-place tying finish at the Metro Cup in Camden, N.J.
Head coach Meg Barnes' young team will be looking to turn some heads in the upcoming season and continue their strong rowing.
Led by Mary Conniff, second seat Lauren Dunn, third seat Michelle Schwach, stroke seat Sara Sheffer and coxswain Katie Johnson, this year's crew team propelled the Bulls through the year and will remain as favorites in the upcoming season's schedule.
UB gained respect throughout the season and hopes to build on that reputation. In the ECAC/Metro polls through mid-April, UB's novice eight team ranks first ahead of such programs as St. Joseph's, Villanova and Massachusetts. UB's first and second varsity eights, as well as the varsity four also ranks in their polls with both eights sitting fourth and the varsity four at sixth. West Virginia, Massachusetts and Fordham rank higher than the Bulls in the first varsity eight polls.
