Student Says Columnist is Anti-American

Letter To The Editor

Your extremely leftist coverage of the war In Iraq is sickening. It is, however, consistent with all other liberal garbage in the sense that is spins the truth. In the April 26 Spectrum, the two opinion pieces are just blatantly ridiculous.

First off, Daniel Stein talks about how good of a role model Venezuela's oil industry is, and how much the United States opposed President Hugo Chaves' oil reforms. Are you serious? Because anyone that knows anything about Venezuela and their current oil crisis - that's right, I said crisis - knows that they are in deep trouble and have been ever since Chaves was elected.

So I ask you this, do you liberals ever read in between the lines? In this case, do you ever read the stuff that's flat out in front? Because I do, and here's the real story:

Chaves might be the most hated man in Venezuela right now. His reforms you so gracefully described have done nothing but threatened to destabilize the country, the region and OPEC. This is a man who just last April lost complete control of his country for 48 hours. He made promises to the nation's huge poverty-stricken population and as with all liberal promises to help the little guy, he couldn't come through.

It was so entertaining to read about the "first-class, people-first" oil industry in Venezuela without you mentioning their massive oil strikes that just occurred a few months ago. Did you guys not hear about those? It's only been on the news everywhere. Stein makes President George W. Bush and America seem like they're the bad guys trying to bully Venezuela, yet he failed to also mention that because of Chaves' control, oil prices skyrocketed 50-cents in the course of one day on Dec. 5, 2002.

Now don't get me wrong, Chaves comes from a country that has a long history of dictators and the fact may be that he is a better man than his predecessors, but he clearly isn't that much better and he clearly isn't leading Venezuela into a new and better direction with his socialist beliefs.

When was the last time a socialist country was well off? In theory, Socialism (which is what Chaves believes in) works well for only a short period of time if at all before it crumbles fast and hard. Just ask Russia. Just ask any one in Venezuela.

Stein also forgot to mention that people from Venezuela are saying Chaves' government is the most corrupt government Venezuela has seen in 100 years, and they've had some infamous corrupt leaders. Just this past January in Miami, over 100,000 Venezuelans and other sympathizers from Latin American nations, including Cuba, protested Chaves and his actions. They've even compared his recent actions to terrorism.

These people - who know him a lot better than you or I do - say he is a spitting image of Fidel Castro and they believe his government threatens to destroy Venezuela's economy. Yet you print a column saying his country is a role model of what Iraq should be and what Bush should be supporting? I don't know what was more ridiculous: how poorly the truth was reflected in this column, or how an editor could look over it and say, "Yeah, lets print this."

You ended your column by saying, "if this war wasn't about oil, they (as in the country you live in) sure fooled me." Well, I'll end my beef on your column by saying, "if your column wasn't filled with blatant lies and hidden agendas, then you (as in Anti-American liberal) sure fooled me.

As for Brian Weinstein's op-ed, I only read the first line before I stopped: "Right now, there are about a million reasons to hate the United States." No Brian (Weinstein), you are extremely wrong. There are, however, a million reasons to hate you.

Face it people, Al Gore isn't president and let me tell you, we're all better off, whether you want to believe it or not.

I can't believe I pay a $1 a year to keep The Spectrum going. Where's your integrity?
