Smoke Alarms Student Union

At approximately 5:30 Thursday evening the Student Union was evacuated due to an overheated elevator circuit breaker which triggered a fire alarm. The University Police report that there was smoke coming from the area and, as a matter of protocol, the Getzville Fire Department was called in.

"It was just some smoke in one of the elevator's mechanical rooms," said Lt. Daniel Walgate of the University Police. "The fire department checked the rooms and checked for smoke, and that was it."

Students waited outside the Union for a half hour, until the police cleared the building for re-entry. A second fire alarm sounded at 6 p.m. resulting from residual smoke from the upper levels of the building. There was no second evacuation, as police shut off the alarm promptly. No injuries or damages were reported.
