UB takes two from Mount St. Mary's

The Bulls evened their record at 4-4 by sweeping a two-game set against Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md. Saturday. UB rallied in the first game, erasing a two-run deficit early and surviving a late run by the Mountaineers to pull off the 11-10 win. The Bulls cruised through the second game, taking the nightcap 9-3, to extend UB's winning streak to three games.

Game one saw the Bulls jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Bryan Sanchez doubled to score leadoff man Phil Vanhorne, and was then was driven in by co-captain Brandon DiCesare's single. The Mountaineers tied the score at 2-2 before runs by John Boom and co-captain Adrian Daniels put the Bulls back on top 4-2.

The third inning proved costly for UB as MSM's Walter Talarek hit a grand slam to put the Mountaineers back out in front 6-4.

UB came back, scoring four runs on two hits and two errors. Trailing by a run in the sixth, Buffalo's co-captains came through for the team. Daniels scored the tying run on a past ball and DiCesare immediately followed with a three-run, bases-clearing double to put UB up for good.

Mount St. Mary's would threaten once more in the seventh after a triple by Burt Stormes coupled with hits by Dan Fowler and John Digirolamo to cut the lead to one. Trailing 11-10 in the bottom of the seventh, the Mountaineers had two on with one out when Mark Garrard struck out the top of MSM's order, securing the 11-10 win for the Bulls and locking up his first save of the season in the process.

John Sullivan (2-1) picked up his second win, pitching 5 innings and earning 3 strikeouts.

In game two, UB's Brandon Dunford pitched a complete game, scattering five hits and striking out 10 in a 9-3 Bulls victory. Dunford improved his record to 1-2 on the season. Over both games Daniels went a combined 7 for 8, recording five runs, four RBIs, and a homerun.

Dunford would get all the support he would need in the fifth inning. Daniels started it off with a two-run homer, followed by Tim Sova, who smacked an RBI double to give UB a 5-3 edge.

The Bulls added four more runs in the seventh on RBIs by Daniels, Dicesare, Sanchez and Vanhorne.

Vanhorne had a great offensive day as well, going 4-9 with three runs and three stolen bases.

UB's game at Duquesne University today was postponed due to an inclement weather forecast. The Bulls' next game will be Saturday, March 23 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., weather permitting.
