Greek Activities Suspended

University At Buffalo: Statement of February 13, 2002

Based on allegations related to a Greek letter organization at the University at Buffalo, all fraternity and sorority activities have been suspended, at least through Saturday, February 16, 2002.

Students and national and local organization representatives are currently being advised of this action. It has been taken in response to allegations of an off-campus incident on Feb. 9-10, 2002 involving possible violations of University's Policy and Operational Guidelines for Social Fraternal Organizations and Student Conduct Rules. The allegations involve possible unlawful possession, use or distribution of illicit drugs or alcohol as part of activities, including distribution to persons under the age of 21 years.

Until the conclusion of the review of current allegations, organizations are prohibited from sponsoring or advertising any events; participating in the campus Greek governance process; participating in Greek events and activities; using campus facilities, soliciting, educating, or inducting new student members; and using the university name in connection with the organization or any of its functions.

Prior to the resumption of any organizational activities, a campus meeting with Greek letter organization officers and new members is being scheduled to reiterate campus and state policies that prohibit hazing and substance abuse. University and University Police officials will participate in that session. A university decision on resumption of some or all activities by some or all organizations will be made following that meeting.

Campus and criminal investigations into the allegations are ongoing. Individuals and organizations allegedly involved are being advised of the possibility of charges related to the incident at the conclusion of the investigation.

The university is fully cooperating with the criminal investigation, which is being conducted by the Erie County Sheriff's Department. UB has urged all campus organizations and individuals to cooperate with them in this effort.

The university will have no further comment on the allegations or response, due to the on-going nature of the current investigation.
