Running Out of Chances

Volleyball Still Seeking First MAC Win

Sometimes, although a team has gotten off to a rocky start, its players can rebound and save their season with a few victories at the end (i.e. the UB football team). Often it takes an inspirational speech from a coach or captain to bring players out of its funk, and inspire them to compete at a respectable level.

Turning around the women's volleyball season, however, would require the resurrection of Vince Lombardi and every inspirational coach Hollywood has ever produced.

The Bulls (5-21, 0-16 MAC) dropped yet another conference match Saturday to the Akron Zips (17-6, 11-5 MAC), losing three games to one. The squad is still looking for their first MAC win.

The two teams found themselves in a 20-20 deadlock in what turned out to be the final game of the night, but the Zips outscored UB 10-4 down the stretch to take the contest 30-24.

The Bulls started off the match on a positive note by winning game one. Keri Shiels posted seven kills and Katie Henry gave the Bulls a spark by serving for four-straight points en route to the 30-27 victory.

Buffalo, however, lost the next three games. Game two was a close 30-28 decision, while game three was closed out with a 30-22 score.

Lindsay Matikosh led the Bulls defensively with a game-high 21 digs to go along with her 10 kills. It was her third double double in as many games; she now has 13 on the season.

The Zips, who heading into the contest were tied with Bowling Green for first place in the MAC East Division, were led by Sandy Lewis and Ashlie Case who were two of five players to pick up double doubles for Akron.

Buffalo will have two more chances to capture their elusive first MAC win this season. Their next game will be in Oxford, Ohio against Miami on Nov. 16. They will return to Alumni Arena for their final game of the season on the Nov.18 against Ohio.
