Crew Team Strokes to Success at Head of Elk

With just one meet left, the women's crew team is hoping to continue its momentum following a successful meet at the Head of the Elk regatta last Sunday.

In the Head of the Elk, held at Elkhart, Ind., UB competed with squads from nationally recognized schools such as Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State, Indiana, and Marquette.

The team's lightweight four - Becky Mohr, Gina Hayes, Jess Ecke, Nina Fleck and coxswain Sarah Wold - finished third with a time of 17:51.45. Miami University took first place, finishing in 17:01.07.

UB also performed well in the open-eight competition. Tracy Clarke, Tara Celestini, Mary Conniff, Sarah Vieira, Kali Spoto, Sara Sheffer, Karey Smollar, Melissa Warhol and coxswain Katie Johnson finished seventh out of the 24 teams with a time of 14:38.68.

The open four squad - Victoria Kolomiets, Melissa Ward, Margaret Siller and Courtney Kane - recorded a sixth place finish out of 17 teams.

The women enter their last meet of the fall season next Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Frostbite Regatta in Philadelphia.
