Matt Pollock stepped up to the plate 221 times in 2012.
Last season's baseball team graduated three productive players - including Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Jason Kanzler.
There was little reason for optimism entering the 2013 season as Buffalo baseball followed its 17th consecutive losing season.
Senior forward Javon McCrea scored 25 points for the second straight game as Buffalo (14-7, 8-3 Mid-American Conference) defeated Miami Ohio (9-13, 5-6 MAC) on the road Wednesday night. The Bulls took the lead early and never trailed.

After playing the bottom two teams in the Mid-American Conference last week, the men's basketball team faces a greater challenge this week. The Bulls (13-7, 7-3 MAC) will play on the road against Miami Ohio (9-12, 5-5 MAC) Wednesday night and return to Alumni Arena Saturday afternoon to face Ohio (17-6, 7-3 MAC). Buffalo enters the week tied with Ohio and two games ahead of the RedHawks. The Bulls have been hot as of late, as they have won four of their past five games by at least nine points. Senior forward Javon McCrea took advantage of the inferior competition last week, winning MAC East Player of the Week after averaging 22 points and 17 rebounds in games against Ball State (4-17, 1-9 MAC) and Central Michigan (8-14, 1-9 MAC). McCrea climbed up the all-time school scoring list as well, moving into third place all-time in points and in rebounds, with a career-high 20-rebound performance against the Chippewas.
I was thinking all week about the direction of my satire column for this year's Sex Issue until something wonderful appeared on my Twitter timeline Sunday evening: Michael Sam could become the first openly gay player in the NFL. I know calling something a "monumental moment" is a
Being a student-athlete can making dating hard. Daily practices and lengthy road trips make it difficult to find time for someone else and to sustain a relationship. Junior defensive back Dwellie Striggles and sophomore sprinter Malayah White, however, have made it work.

After becoming only the third UB player to score 1,800 career points in the men's basketball team's last game, senior forward Javon McCrea hit another milestone Saturday night against Central Michigan: setting a career high in rebounds. McCrea had 20 rebounds and 25 points to help the Bulls (13-7, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) defeat Central Michigan (8-14, 1-9 MAC), 79-70, Saturday night in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The Bulls shot 51 percent from the field and limited Central Michigan to 41 percent.
Women's basketball head coach Felisha Legtte-Jack proclaimed, "It's better to win ugly than lose pretty," following the Bulls' Thursday afternoon win over Ohio. The Bulls (13-8, 6-4 Mid-American Conference) defeated the Bobcats (8-13, 3-7 MAC), 55-43, in a Thursday matinee at Alumni Arena.
It doesn't get much better than scoring the game-winning goal in double overtime on the last game of the season for the league tournament championship.
Football The football team made several announcements this week, including: the 2014 season opponents; the schedule for its four non-conference games; three performers for the UB Football Tailgate Concert Series; and the 2014 recruiting class. The Bulls will open their season at home on Aug.
Trena Peel understands offensive prowess. This spring, her challenge is passing on what she knows to a UB team desperately in need of an offensive turnaround. The Bulls scored only 2.7 runs per game last season while batting .266 as a team.
In a season of change for the men's basketball team under first-year head coach Bobby Hurley, it was two of the team's most tenured players who led the Bulls to their 10th consecutive home win on Wednesday night. Behind seniors Javon McCrea and Jarod Oldham, the Bulls (12-7, 6-3 Mid-American Conference) defeated Ball State (4-16, 1-8 MAC), 69-48, Wednesday night at Alumni Arena in front of an estimated crowd of 2,558. McCrea scored 19 points, making him the third UB player to score at least 18,000 career points.
