UB Celebrates the Life and Mourns the Death of English Professor

Renowned literary critic, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Samuel L. Clemens Professor of English Leslie Fiedler died Wednesday afternoon in his Buffalo home.Fiedler, 85, battled Parkinson's Disease for the last several years.Often referred to as the "bad-boy of American letters," Fiedler served the last 39 years at UB and was the author of more than two dozen books, including "Love and Death in the American Novel," often considered his major work.

Anyone who has been kicking themselves for missing "Final Destination" a few years ago can rest easy come this Friday: The sequel is out, and though it might have a few entertaining qualities, the film fails to deliver the terror it promises."Final Destination 2" is fast-paced and bloodcurdling, showing audiences who have been on the edge of their seats for three years just what has happened to Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) after she survived the events of the first film.

Free Tuition for the SA E-Board

Last year, the three-member executive board of the Student Association legally changed the SA budget to provide themselves with free tuition in addition to the wages they earn as public servants for the students of this university.The money used to cover this expense, which could amount to upwards of $15,000 per semester, will come out of the mandatory student activity fee (not covered by most scholarships or the Tuition Assistance Program) which has a budget funded by the approximately $70 student activity fee each full-time undergraduate pays per semester.

University Apartment Rates on the Rise - Again

Students residing in the University Apartments will have to save more pennies: Rent is going up again.The University Apartment Board has increased rent rates for all residents of Hadley Village, South Lake Village, Flint Village, Flickenger Court and Creekside Village.Rent increases range from $20 to $37 a month, depending on the apartment complex.

The wheels are in motion for President William R. Greiner's employer-assisted housing program to go into effect.The plan, which is aimed at improving the University Heights area by encouraging UB employees to purchase residences in the area, is slated to begin in the next few weeks.
