October Events to Teach About Domestic Violence

During domestic violence awareness events this month, UB students will have many opportunities to take part in events aimed at celebrating those who break free of violence, mourning those who have died because of it, and helping those who strive to put an end to it."Domestic violence knows no economic, ethnic or social boundaries.

Spiritualist Lecture Strove to Open Minds

People of all ages gathered in the Student Union Monday night to receive a very different type of medicine through a lecture called "Healing the Spiritual Way."The lecture focused on the teachings of Bruno Groening, a German spiritualist who believed it was possible to cure any physical illness, including addiction, through the channeling of energy from God.

"Pull the Trigger, Please"

Perhaps the members of the all-female band The Organ sat down and watched an "I Love the 80s" marathon before recording their first full-length album, "Grab That Gun."The record is a walk down the well-trodden path of retro rock that lacks any new flavor.The quintet from Vancouver apparently thought that adding Ashley Webber, an organist, would make for an original sound and was even good enough for the name of their ensemble.

Men's RugbyBuffalo's Mad Turtles defeated Cornell by a score of 15-5 and took possession of first place in Division I of the New York State Rugby Conference.Cornell applied a lot of pressure early in the match, and found itself as close as the five-meter line, but could not come away with any points, as Buffalo's back-line of defense was able to stop them.The Turtles were able to counter Cornell's considerable size advantage by keeping the ball in motion and not letting them set up, thus forcing them to cover the width of the field, and not just the length.

Intramural Sports at UB: Exchanging Competitiveness for Camaraderie

Late in the evening, when very few students are roaming the halls of the academic and athletic buildings, a select group of students can be found in the depths of Alumni Arena, jumping and yelling as if their lives depend upon it.On any given weeknight any number of the approximately 8,000 intramural sports registrants, playing any of the 12 intramural sports offered by the Department of Recreation and Intramural Services.Abe Robinson, senior psychology and communication major said he looks forward to his Thursday night basketball games."It gives students something to do away from class," he said.

More than one month into the semester and one week after the Fee Referendum vote, Student Association President Anthony Burgio and his administration have scored some major accomplishments, including a health center and uniform Sub-Board fee - but have also left some campaign promises unfulfilled."I ran on a platform that had some external points, huge events and free tickets," Burgio said.

Week four in the NFL was highlighted by exciting match-ups and victories by underdog teams.The day began in Houston, where the Texans improved to 2-1 against the AFC West by defeating the Oakland Raiders 30-17.

The Subway Veggie Delight sandwich is about as important to my diet as anything these days, so Sunday evening I headed over to the Commons to plop yet another $3.49 down on the sub I spent most of my summer enjoying in different parts of the country.The Sandwich Artist behind the counter asked me why I looked so tired and I told him I hadn't returned home from the Springsteen/R.E.M./Bright Eyes show in Cleveland until 5 a.m.
