Red and blue fallacy

The Red Barn in Demopolis, Alabama doesn't lie. The crimson clapboard structure hasn't changed much since its barn days, though it's now a restaurant; and it sits right at the heart of the South, deep in Red America.Two friends and I set out over winter break in search of Red America, defined for us as the mysterious land between the coasts, full of guns, rebel flags, Wal-Marts and Bush voters.Talking about a cultural divide between "Red America" and "Blue America" became common a few years ago.

Burgio to unveil new platform at press conference

For the staff members, senators and assemblypersons of the Student Association, the spring semester ball officially starts rolling Monday when SA President Anthony Burgio will unveil a new "platform" at a press conference in the Student Union.The new proposals won't exactly knock anyone's socks off, but they should lead to a stronger SA for the long-term, Burgio said."What I asked each department to do is to set a few goals.

The start of the new semester can be demanding for students. This, coupled with bad weather and the additional stress of spending a month's worth of food money on textbooks, can be a real pain in the neck - and back and shoulders.Health Services is now prepared to help students take care of these pains.Since Monday, UB's Student Health Office began offering students the chance to receive chiropractic care on campus.

Chancellor rejects offer to leave SUNY

SUNY Chancellor Robert King will remain in his position after rejecting an exit package, The New York Times reported.While he will not be leaving immediately, King has made plans to leave SUNY in the next six months, anonymous sources in the Times said.A plan was in place for King to take a sabbatical from the role of chancellor and accept a $170,000 leave of absence.

"Relief fund nets $1,000 for tsunami victims"

UB raised over $1,000 from students during a three-day fundraiser that ended Monday and will go towards aiding the children who were victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami, according to UB officials.Mary Clare Fahey, who helped organize the fundraiser, said she is happy with its results.

Students with ties to region shaken

When Sriram Vilayanoor woke up the morning of Dec. 26 and checked the online version of India's national newspaper, The Hindu, the news splashed across the Web site was nothing Vilayanoor could have prepared himself to see.At that point the reports coming out of India said an earthquake had rocked the region, leaving 1,000 people dead and many more homeless.But as the day went on and the death toll steadily increased, Vilayanoor and the rest of the world learned India, along with over a dozen other countries, had also been struck by a deadly tsunami that would claim almost 300,000 lives.

Bulls need win against sharp-shooting Huskies

Fans of the men's basketball team are checking their calendars, as March is drawing near, and asking when the team is going to start winning.The heavily hyped Bulls have struggled in conference play lately, falling below .500 in the MAC with a close loss to Kent State last week.Tuesday night at home against Northern Illinois, the team hopes to regroup.The Bulls (10-5 overall, 3-4 Mid-American Conference) defeated the Huskies (6-9 overall, 2-5 MAC) in the first round of the MAC playoffs last year at Alumni Arena.
