Independent-label metal acts have a stiff barrier to overcome to create distance between them and the thousands of bands around the country trying to attain the status of "underground sensation."The release of "O' God, the Aftermath" is going to kick down that barrier in manner of a bull with its balls in a knot for Norma Jean.The group's first album, "Bless the Martyr, Kiss the Child," sold more than 50,000 copies, almost unheard of for an independent artist.

Crowded race for UB Council position

Six students will campaign during the next two weeks for the sole student seat on the UB Council, a high-profile advisory board to President John Simpson.Incumbent representative David Brooks said he would not run again for the position due to conflicts with his graduate studies in UB's School of Medicine.Brooks said he's proud of his accomplishments as a council member, and he called the race a great opportunity for all the candidates."They should look at this as a tremendous opportunity to have a huge impact on all students at UB," Brooks said.

Officials call online apartment applications a success

After a month of student anticipation and anxiety, on-campus apartment assignments were mailed out Monday as UB officials said the new online application process was a success.In previous years, apartment applications were done in person, on a first-come basis, and students would camp out for hours to secure a spot."The online application process was very successful, we ended up having few problems with it," said Michael Koziej, assistant director for University Residence Halls and Apartments.The only issue, Koziej said, was a technical one.

Bulls nearly sweep area rival Niagara

The UB women's tennis team was nearly flawless on Friday in a 7-0 victory over local rival Niagara University.UB climbed to 3-1 in dual matches, dropping the Purple Eagles to 4-6 this season.The Bulls secured the doubles point even though the number one doubles pairing of Andreea Novaceanu and Tina Jacob lost their match.

One thought that crosses nearly every first-year student's mind when they get to University Heights for their first frat party is: "Man, this place is a dump." Unfortunately if these students work their way beyond Bailey Avenue, they'lal find it doesn't get any better.
