Modern styles mix with tradition at Japan Nite

With the doors at Alumni Arena set to open for Spring Fest, the doors of the Student Union Theater opened to the rhythms of Japanese culture Saturday as Japanese SA held its second annual Japan Nite.The performance was divided into several different sketches, all of which were related to the show's central storyline about a Japanese princess and her bodyguard's trip from the past into the modern day.Shintaro Yamazaki, president of Japanese SA, said Saturday's cultural event was a sequel to last year's inaugural Japan Nite.Especially with the buzz generated by Spring Fest, Yamazaki said he was happy with the turnout."We sold over 250 tickets," said Yamazaki, a junior business major.

Student documentary explores social issues in Cuba

Five months after filming illegally undercover in Cuba, two UB graduate students are now hoping to attract attention to their documentary about the social effects of tourism on the isolated Communist island."Entre Luz y Sol," which means "Between Light and Sun" in Spanish, is the culmination of almost a year's work by Clorinda Andrade, the writer and co-producer of the film.

Winning streak swept away

After claiming victories in its last seven games of the season, the UB softball team saw its winning streak come to an abrupt end on the road in a three-game series against Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green.In Saturday's doubleheader, the Falcons (26-26 overall, 11-8 MAC) defeated the Bulls (17-26, 8-8 MAC) 1-0 in eight innings and 8-0 in five innings while in Sunday's single game, Bowling Green scored a 2-1 victory over Buffalo."We have been hitting the ball the last couple of games and we have been winning," said senior centerfielder Ann Magur.

Baseball charges through Big 4 consolation round

After losing in the first round of the Big 4 tournament to St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, the Bulls came back strong to finish third.Freshman pitcher Tony Kurtz pitched eight solid innings in his first career start to give the Bulls a 10-3 win over rival Niagara.In control from the first pitch, the right-hander dominated the Purple Eagles, allowing just two earned runs off of five hits.

First round sweep sets tone for Bulls

In a rematch from just a week ago, the Bulls did away with the Mastodons of Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne University (IPFW) for the second time in a row.This time, however, Buffalo prevailed with greater stakes on the line: elimination from the Mid-American Conference Championships.Because of the fact that this is the championship tournament, the first team to reach four total points ends the match.
