Why is it so hard for people to respect UB as a Division I school?Just because the university hasn't received a hunk of molded bronze or fancily cut glass within the past five years, give or take, doesn't mean it is any less deserving of Division I status than any other team.If championships are the only way a team can be recognized as a legitimate organization, many would have to say buh-bye to their favorite teams.

The new bull on campus

Just eight weeks after college sports guru Gene Corrigan released his analysis of the UB athletics program, the school solved one of its most pressing issues this summer, hiring Warde Manuel as its new athletic director."We have selected a director of athletics who is thoroughly steeped in the world of intercollegiate sports at the highest level, and one who knows the critical importance of balancing athletic and academic excellence," said President John Simpson at a July press conference where UB announced Manuel's appointment.Manuel has spent the last nine years at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where he had been one of the school's seven assistant athletic directors since 1998."Basically I've been in Michigan for nine years, seven of that full time," said Manuel, who came to campus for the football team's media day earlier this month, but arrived for good on Monday.

"Corrigan completes report, finds lack of focus and finances"

Focus and funding were the main points of former NCAA president Gene Corrigan's extensive report on the University at Buffalo Athletics Department, released June 1.Corrigan, who was hired in December by UB President John Simpson, stated in his report, "If UB, as an institution at the highest levels in higher education, wants to play at the highest grade of athletic competition, the Mid-American Conference is the right place to be."However, Corrigan questioned the path on which the program is going."Staying on the present course will not lead to any real improvement in the program," said the report. In Simpson's eyes, there is no doubt where Buffalo belongs."I want to state very clearly: UB is firmly committed to Division I-A football, and we are equally committed to building a winning program in the Mid-American Conference," said Simpson in a press release.
