Fresh start for Flying Squirrels

The women's rugby team earned the thrill of finally winning a rivalry game after a ten-year losing streak, beating Cornell University 24-18 in front of a home crowd on Sunday."Cornell is our biggest rival and beating them is something we always work very hard toward," said the club's president, junior Megan Rasbeck.Nicknamed the Flying Squirrels, the team is soaring after its latest win with hopes of using the victory as a building block for the rest of their games this season."It has been over ten years since we beat Cornell," Rasbeck said.

UB researchers work on front lines of anti-terrorism and U.S. security

In light of Hurricane Katrina and the ever-growing concern of another terrorist attack, UB research teams are at the cutting edge of the mounting need for improvements in homeland security.An array of disciplines - from immunology to environmental and chemical engineering - received over $21 million in grants to investigate methods to improve and combat extreme events, bringing the UB community deeper into the exceedingly real and relevant issue of terrorism."We have a comprehensive engineering school and very strong units in the health and natural sciences with a record of collaboration and a willingness to apply our scholarship to important problems," said Mark Karwan, dean of the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Buffalo program aims to increase literacy

With one billion adults - a shocking 26 percent of the world's population - illiterate, getting individuals interested in reading has never been more important.Members of the Just Buffalo Literary Center in downtown Buffalo created the literature program, "If All of Buffalo Read the Same Book," to fight back against a culture more prone to turning on the television than picking up a newspaper.Created in 2000, the intent of the center was to create discussion amongst the diverse inhabitants of the Buffalo area.

Gender Week makes impassioned start

Addressing the devastation of sacredness and effects of imagery through the eyes of Native Americans, writer Winona LaDuke kicked off UB's fourth annual "Women and Gender Week" on Monday with a keynote speech at the Center for the Arts.LaDuke, a renowned author and active member of the Mississippi Anishinaabeg tribe, introduced an entirely new spin on how imagery of historical figures and geographically significant sites dehumanize women and people in our society."I think we're losing touch with our humanity," LaDuke said.

Stane takes three at Dartmouth

With a commanding run of serves and seeing-eye shots the competition simply couldn't catch up to, freshman Octavian Stane led the way for UB men's tennis last weekend at the Volkl Shootout at Dartmouth University.Stane was one of two players who tallied winning records in singles action, and two Bulls doubles teams also came out on top with strong efforts.Stane accumulated a 3-1 record, notching two wins and one loss in E Division competition, along with one win in the D Division.Stane's two wins in E Division play came against St.

Gwyther receives national honorsFreshman midfielder Dan Gwyther of the UB men's soccer team was recently honored by "College Soccer" as one of 26 freshmen players "making an impact" in Divison-I this week.Gwyther has started each of UB's seven victories as part of a Bulls' defensive unit that did not allow the opposing team to score in four games and is off to an undefeated season, 7-0-0.Basketball buzz beginsWith more than 50 days to go before the opening tip-off for the UB men's basketball team, the buzz has begun thanks to an ESPN announcement that Buffalo is participating in Bracket Buster Saturday.
