'Amadeus' strikes a note with all audiences

Such sentiment unfortunately proved to be the fate of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the subject of the Irish Classical Theater Company's production of "Amadeus.""Amadeus" follows Mozart through the latter portion of his life in the 18th century, which was spent as a struggling a composer in Vienna.

Buffalo program aims to increase literacy

With one billion adults - a shocking 26 percent of the world's population - illiterate, getting individuals interested in reading has never been more important.Members of the Just Buffalo Literary Center in downtown Buffalo created the literature program, "If All of Buffalo Read the Same Book," to fight back against a culture more prone to turning on the television than picking up a newspaper.Created in 2000, the intent of the center was to create discussion amongst the diverse inhabitants of the Buffalo area.

Gender Week makes impassioned start

Addressing the devastation of sacredness and effects of imagery through the eyes of Native Americans, writer Winona LaDuke kicked off UB's fourth annual "Women and Gender Week" on Monday with a keynote speech at the Center for the Arts.LaDuke, a renowned author and active member of the Mississippi Anishinaabeg tribe, introduced an entirely new spin on how imagery of historical figures and geographically significant sites dehumanize women and people in our society."I think we're losing touch with our humanity," LaDuke said.

Stane takes three at Dartmouth

With a commanding run of serves and seeing-eye shots the competition simply couldn't catch up to, freshman Octavian Stane led the way for UB men's tennis last weekend at the Volkl Shootout at Dartmouth University.Stane was one of two players who tallied winning records in singles action, and two Bulls doubles teams also came out on top with strong efforts.Stane accumulated a 3-1 record, notching two wins and one loss in E Division competition, along with one win in the D Division.Stane's two wins in E Division play came against St.

Gwyther receives national honorsFreshman midfielder Dan Gwyther of the UB men's soccer team was recently honored by "College Soccer" as one of 26 freshmen players "making an impact" in Divison-I this week.Gwyther has started each of UB's seven victories as part of a Bulls' defensive unit that did not allow the opposing team to score in four games and is off to an undefeated season, 7-0-0.Basketball buzz beginsWith more than 50 days to go before the opening tip-off for the UB men's basketball team, the buzz has begun thanks to an ESPN announcement that Buffalo is participating in Bracket Buster Saturday.

Women's soccer loses heartbreaker at home

One mistake is all it takes.Though dominant for most of the game, the UB women's soccer team was held scoreless and fell apart just before the end, allowing a goal in the final five minutes of regulation, losing 1-0 on Friday night to Niagara University (5-1-1).Buffalo out-shot Niagara 14-12, but the most important stat of the game was the goal that gave the Purple Eagles the win.With just over three minutes left to play, Brittany Bisnott of Niagara scored on a breakaway, beating a UB defender to the ball and sliding a shot past senior goaltender Anna-Lesa Calvert.

"With no more Super 8, improvements made throughout dorms"

On-campus housing has always been in high demand, and in past years students have even been housed in local motels and office buildings, but according to UB officials those days are long gone.One of the biggest factors in alleviating overflow was not the creation of new housing spaces on campus, but the new University at Sweethome apartments, according to Joseph Krakowiak, director of University Residence Halls and Apartments."It's not a matter of new bed spaces.

Volleyball starts rocky but finishes smooth

The UB women's volleyball team traveled to Morgantown, W. Va., for the West Virginia University Classic over the weekend and went 2-1 over three games, finishing second-place overall for the tournament.The team improved its record to 7-5 on the season, but Buffalo Head Coach Jim Lodes is still expecting more from his team."Honestly, we would have liked to have played at a higher level," Lodes said.

Running of the Bulls impressive in Toledo

The future looks bright for the UB men's and women's cross country teams. Each made a respectable showing at the seventh annual Central Collegiate Track meet Saturday in Toledo.Both Bulls squads are continuing to prove themselves as top teams in the Mid-American Conference.

Talking Leaves bookstore a local treasure

Talking Leaves lies amidst the construction sites and frustrating traffic jams on Main Street. It is one of Buffalo's oldest independent bookstores.Struggling to stay afloat in a business dominated by large corporate chain stores, this small shop has survived and established itself as a bookselling giant throughout both Buffalo and the nation."It is a bookstore that from the very beginning has been dedicated to literature and culture, and it is the only one of its kind in the area," said Professor Mark Shechner, current chair of the English department.
