Recent graduate sentenced for tax fraud

An international student who recently graduated from UB was sentenced Wednesday to 10 weeks in jail after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor tax-fraud charge.Ozir Ozov, 31, had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of deliberately failing to file his 2001 non-resident income tax return, according to The Buffalo News.

Meet the future

With a new head coach and a batch of new assistants, the UB football program welcomed another group of newcomers to the team on Wednesday, including two local standouts and the nephew of a former Bills great.When hired last month, coach Turner Gill was praised for his recruiting prowess, and in his first class of Bulls, the former Husker has signed a group of 14 high school players that includes local quarterback Naaman Roosevelt, the co-New York State Player of the Year who UB managed to steal away from powers Boston College and 1-AA New Hampshire.On a day that marked the start of the national signing period, one group of analysts at Rivals.com ranked UB's incoming class fourth in the conference, only the second time the Bulls climbed into the top five.

According to a recently conducted survey, 69 percent of college students and graduates do not fully understand this column, this issue of The Spectrum, or the novel they're currently reading in class.It's true that not every college student can be defined as the brightest crayon in the box, but the sad news of our dropping literacy rates is still a shocking surprise to our university and to every other higher learning institution across the country.That recent survey, polling 19,000 people, confirmed that the country's literacy rate is slipping lower and lower.

Schiebner shines as Bulls fall in triple OT

Even though they faced defeat, the women's basketball team set a record while falling to the Northern Illinois Huskies in three overtimes Tuesday night.The Bulls and Huskies battled for 55 minutes in DeKalb, Ill., with NIU winning the longest game in Buffalo women's basketball history, 81-72."It's frustrating to play than many overtimes without walking away with a win," said Bulls head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald.

SA scandal heads to judiciary

The case of alleged bribery against Student Association Treasurer Mazin Kased was officially handed over to the Student-wide Judiciary on Wednesday, as an SA committee chose to defer the decision.After several hours of deliberation, the seven-person Election & Credentials Committee did not rule on the individual charges, but rather voted to move the case along to the SWJ.
