Urban planning takes on new heights

When urban planning Master's students looked at an abandoned Glenny Drive apartment complex they saw more than just six dilapidated seven-story buildings that hadn't been lived in since the early 1980s.Instead, they saw the opportunity for something that Buffalo's East Side is sorely lacking: commitment to improvement and development. With the help of Ernest Sternberg, a professor in the department of urban and regional planning, the students have proposed "The Plaza at Kensington Heights," a plan for transforming the 17-acre apartment complex from the 1950s into a large-scale retail development."While conducting our market analysis we found that the distance, upward of five to eight miles, is forcing many city residents to shop and work in the surrounding suburbs," said Nicole McGowen, a graduate student involved in the project."If they wish to shop locally, their choices are limited to local neighborhood or grocery stores.

Yador's helping Advocates sparks controversy

As far as SA elections go, it was the equivalent of a celebrity sighting: Student Association President Dela Yador was out on the floor Wednesday campaigning for the UB Advocates.Yador's presence generated heavy buzz not only because it is rare for current e-board members to openly support candidates, but the move also came after a physical fight outside the Union between students associated with Yador and Greg Stern, the Progress candidate for president. There is no rule that says current e-board members cannot support a party in SA elections."You're kind of using your powers as an official to get votes," said SA Vice President Sonia Kang, who was asked to campaign for Progress.

Green with environmental zeal

That was overtaken by 2005, and experts say that record isn't safe either.According to energy policy attorney Luis Martinez, who lectured on ending global warming at Lafayette Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, temperatures aren't getting any cooler, "global warming won't wait." According to Martinez, whose lecture was sponsored by the UB Green office, climate change is happening so rapidly that people must act now if they hope to save the planet.Since 1979, the size of the North Pole has decreased by more than 25 percent.

E-mail and dorm violations alleged by both parties

This year's Student Association elections have been filled with questionable campaign tactics, and as the elections came to a close on Thursday, both the UB Advocates and Progress party continued to level allegations of dirty politics.Following Tuesday's reports of an e-mail from Viqar Hussain that was sent to the UB athletes listserv, Progress party candidates have alleged that the UB Advocates were "dorm-storming," or distributing campaign flyers throughout the residence halls and slipping them underneath dorm room doors. If UB Advocates did personally slip flyers into dorm rooms, that would be a violation of Residence Halls policy."Tuesday I got out of the shower and saw the flyers underneath my residents' doors, and they were under my door," said Ashonte Stills, a junior academic assistant and Progress candidate for SUNY SA.

Bulls escape scoring funk

Sometimes getting back to basics is just what the doctor ordered, especially for a team that had piled up a mere nine hits and no runs in the last three games. All that changed Wednesday, when the baseball team scored 11 runs to win its game against the Canisius Golden Griffins, 11-3."I'd like to take credit for getting the hitters out of their slumps, but we just told them after that long weekend to get back to basics and swing at pitches in their zone," said head baseball coach Bill Breene. From the outset, the players showed that they value the advice of their coach highly.
