Hot Hot Heat go luke warm

While many fans may grab Hot Hot Heat's new album Happiness LTD. for their next dance party, only a handful of songs will be worthy of the bash.Compared to previous albums from the Canadian quartet, Happiness is not nearly as upbeat, accenting the overall heartache mood of the CD.And yet, despite the dimness of the record, the band has clearly matured, and its lyrical content and overall sound reflect it.

Communication Department Chair Frank Tutzauer, Ph.D., is a proud "southern boo" who has combined his educational pursuits of math and debate into one successful career at UB.Born in Greensboro, NC, Tutzauer grew up in New Orleans, where he still considers his home and where his father and siblings still live."It's kind of odd to still consider New Orleans home," Tutzauer said.

Birthday bash thrown for the Constitution

UB celebrated Constitution Day on Monday by throwing a birthday party for the Constitution in the Student Union Lobby.The event featured red, white and blue frosted cupcakes, Constitution trivia, voter registration and performances by the Buffalo Chips and the Royal Pitches."Every public university in the country is required by law to commemorate Constitution Day," said Dennis Black, vice president of Student Affairs.

New software offers game design opportunities for both Xbox and PC

In a presentation held in the Student Union on Sept. 17, representatives from Microsoft introduced a new game development platform that enables anyone with a computer and Internet connection to create and distribute games for PC and Xbox 360.According to Gus Weber, academic relations manager for Microsoft, the platform - called XNA - is free to download and features complete access to an online code database as well as a drag-and-drop interface, one that minimizes the need to write original code."This is a video game development for the masses.

Motion City Maturity

Battling sobriety is never easy. But to do so while simultaneously recording a highly anticipated third full-length album, touring eight months a year, and enduring a breakup is damn near impossible.Motion City Soundtracker and vocalist Justin Pierre had to deal with eerily similar conditions during the recording of their latest record, aptly titled Even If It Kills Me.It's clear that Pierre used all of these trying experiences to create Motion City's mellowest, yet most complete, album to date."Fell in Love Without You," the CD's opener, is a fast-paced track that stands out largely because of Moog (vintage keyboard) player Jesse Johnson.

University student tasered at Kerry speech

On Monday, Sept. 17, police at the University of Florida subdued a student by the name of Andrew Meyer with a taser during a discussion forum with Massachusetts Senator John Kerry.According to an article by Kim Wilmath in The Independent Florida Alligator newspaper, Meyer questioned Senator Kerry about his association with a secret society at Yale University.

Interview: Ben Dussault throws it down

Black Sabbath, Sepultura, Slayer, Metallica and Machine Head are all masters of legendary metal. They're considered pioneers of the metal and hardcore genres, and are listed as defining influences for drummer Ben Dussault of Throwdown.Dussault reflects back on his earlier days and claims that Master of Puppets destroyed him when he was younger."I remember listening to Vulgar Display of Power (Pantera) when I was 14 years old playing video games with my friends and we would go crazy," he said.
