Blogging as a means of reaching students

In a Teaching and Learning Workshop presentation this past Friday, Kevin Lim, a doctoral student in the communication department, showed UB faculty and staff how they can reach out to their students and promote participation through non-traditional means.Lim explained to his audience the basic concepts of Internet blogging and how professors can utilize this tool to foster student learning.

Degenerative diseases expert visits UB

The Department of Physiology and Biophysics hosted a lecture on Parkinson's disease by Professor Benjamin Wolozin, M.D., Ph.D., of Boston University this past Thursday at Farber Hall.According to Wolozin, Parkinson's disease is a degenerative neurological disease caused by a certain genetic combination.

Promises Fulfilled

With bone-crunching punches and flesh-splicing violence, Eastern Promises is undoubtedly a satisfying experience for buzz-seeking movie-goers.On the surface, the film is a textbook thriller, but the fine psychological drama dwells beneath as director David Cronenberg (A History of Violence) brings a not-so-unexpected depth to the picture.The main catalyst for the plot comes when Anna (Naomi Watts, The Painted Veil), a mild-mannered English midwife, is given a baby that came from a young prostitute who died giving birth.The only clue is a Russian diary written by the late prostitute.

Professor demonstrates Aristotle's logic

UB professor of philosophy Dr. John Corcoran hosted a presentation and discussion on his paper, Aristotle's Demonstrative Logic, this past Thursday.Corcoran wrote the paper in a way that would be understandable to non-specialists so that the discussion could be open to all students.

With Irish blood rushing through every member of the crowd and the sweet sound of bones cracking in the mosh pit, Boston's own Dropkick Murphys left Buffalo with a few scars that won't soon go away.Focusing on their two most recent albums, The Warrior's Code and The Meanest of Times, the band produced just as much energy as what's heard on their studio tracks.

"Educators, patients discuss HIV/AIDS"

Students from UB and Buffalo State College gathered this past Friday to discuss the impact of HIV/AIDS on society and the importance of safe sex.Sisters from Delta Sigma Theta hosted the discussion, intending to raise HIV/AIDS awareness and help educate the public.

Anyone would be hard-pressed not to call UB a "party campus." We hold two or more parties every weekend; any student who bothers to go to classes on Fridays will tell you that there are twice as many flyers for the latest party than students in class.Are we a party school?

Violence on campuses nationwide

Another university shooting occurred last Friday at Delaware State University. Two freshmen were shot and wounded after a late-night dispute, and the shooter is still at large.After the string of shootings that took place in the late '90s, schools were at peace for some time.
