Faculty Senate discusses dirty classrooms

Campus cleanliness was discussed this Wednesday at the Faculty Senate Executive Committee (FSEC) meeting.Michael Dupre, associate vice president for University facilities, addressed how students and faculty should develop a culture of cleaning on UB campus."We would like to appeal this (responsibility) to students, staff and faculty, and we want to start with students," Dupre said.According to Dupre, since everyone at UB has an interest in maintaining the cleanliness of classrooms and other areas on campus, there will be a community-wide focus on keeping the campus clean.

The problem with a prayer: SA President vs. SA President

In an e-mail sent to Muslim Student Association members and miscellaneous SA administrators on Wednesday morning, Muslim SA President Shujauddin Hussain charged "SA officials" with discriminatory practices.The complaints were filed after the MSA was instructed to vacate the SA office at 350 Student Union immediately following a prayer held there by the group past business hours."I told them 'after you finish praying, please leave,'" said SA Vice-president Ashish Abraham.The business hours of the SA office at 350 Student Union are from 9 a.m.

The seventh time is the charm for the UB School of Management as they rank ninth in the Wall Street Journals top regional schools in the country.After placing on the list for seven consecutive years since 2000, the business school has now solidified a spot in the top ten positions.

Vai-ing for applause

With all the confidence and swagger of a true rock and roll legend, Steve Vai burst onto the Center for the Arts main stage Monday night at UB, bringing his "Theories of Sound '07" tour through Amherst.The evening began with a dark stage and a crescendo of sound that made sure everybody in the audience was on the edge of their seat with anticipation.The crowd went absolutely wild as the guitar wizard walked onstage sporting a glowing green guitar and looking like something out of a drug-induced hallucination.Vai managed to maintain the energy emitted by the crowd for the entire show.

A learning experience in downtown Buffalo

The Buffalo walking tour organized by the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) gave students an opportunity to learn about downtown Buffalo this past Saturday.Over 20 international students joined the three-hour tour in order to explore the culture and history of downtown Buffalo."I think (the tour) was pretty nice, and I learned a lot about American history," said Yajuan Xiang, a graduate student in early childhood education.The tour was guided by Todd Mitchell, an ISSS volunteer who has been introducing downtown Buffalo to UB students for three years.

Because no one can tell you what to think

When John Kapitany, a sophomore pre-pharmacy major, and Kevin Smith, a graduate student studying psychology, met at a meeting the Center for Inquiry held on student leadership, it was the start of a brand new way of thinking at UB.Kapitany and Smith, creators of the UB Freethought SA, had one goal in mind: to create a forum within which different voices can be heard and discussion can freely flow.
