UB mourns the loss of Anthony “Tony” Policare III, a cherished former quarterback, coach and lifelong Bull. On April 21, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer, Policare departed this world at the age of 55. UB football honored him and his legacy in an Instagram post last Wednesday, sharing his passing with the UB community.
Policare’s legacy at the University at Buffalo began on the football field in 1990. As quarterback, his leadership stood out and ignited the Bulls, both on and off the field. His time as a player laid the foundation for his future at the university—coaching.
While playing quarterback for the Bulls, he instilled a sense of compassion and determination to the team. His work ethic and unyielding love for the sport earned him the respect of his fellow teammates, coaches as well as everyone else affiliated with the football program. His impact on the field did not end in 1992 with his career as quarterback, it was only the beginning.
Following his playing career, Policare brought the same passion, dedication and leadership that shaped his time as quarterback to his coaching position at UB; further building on his impact on the university’s football program.
Throughout his eight seasons as offensive coach, Policare helped define the Bulls’ offensive reputation, as well as touched the lives of many players and coaches he worked alongside. His passion and knowledge of the game showed during every practice, game, meeting. Policare dedicated his time as coach to strengthen the team as a whole, not just on the football field.
Even though Policare’s time with the UB football team has come to an end, his legacy remains to live through and inspire those who played and coached alongside him as well as those he coached.
