A Call to Arms

Letter To the Editor

I have been at this University for over four years now. Every semester or two the subject of Israel comes to the feedback section. Opinions quickly turn into arguments, while words like oppression, terrorism, and genocide are thrown around without any regard to how someone with a differing opinion will react to them.

People write about how all they want is peace, and how it is the other side that is responsible for all of the suffering. Examples of violence are given, often accompanied by death tolls. These numbers rise with every reply in an attempt to show which side is truly to blame. Throughout all of this, two simple truths fall by the wayside:

Every life is precious.

Every death is tragic.

There is a great amount of discussion on the problem, and very little on the solution.

As college students, we have a unique opportunity. We are surrounded by people with different backgrounds and different points of view. The resources of an entire university are at our disposal.

Instead of arguing about this situation, talk to one another. Understand what it is that each side wants. Read into the peace talks that have taken place over the years, and find out why they failed. Sit at a table with those you were yelling at a week ago, and try to find a compromise.

I call upon everyone who has a stake in this issue, and anyone who has wanted to do something, but could never figure out what.

Learn about both sides, and make a stand for peace. Stop the arguments. Talk to each other. Work together until a solution is found. Alone, it's a difficult task. Together, we have a chance of making a real difference.
