The nerve, Mr. Zornick, you had to strike that nerve again ("Coulter shock," March 2).
As Ann Coulter will testify, as a young, female conservative with unwavering and uncompromising points of view, nobody would publish her work for almost a decade until she began writing her books. Yes, she says shocking things. She wraps the truth in biting, vicious verbal attacks, but that is how she earns her living. In a society that progressed from Morton Downey Jr. to Howard Stern, to Jerry Springer, it isn't enough for plainspoken debate and analytical prose. It's become a necessity to use brutal language to make a point.
Ultimately, Coulter bases her columns on facts. Her books are always well documented and easy to verify her resources. I'll admit sometimes I have trouble believing her convictions as well, but I won't ignore them. When I find it too hard to digest, I'll put the book down.
Yes, President Bush will distance himself from such a strong voice as Coulter's, but he probably cherishes having such a varsity class cheerleader on his side. On the other side, you have the Democrats reeling in terror from the hate-spewing paranoia that Michael Moore delivered in abundance last year. Time and time again Moore has been proven to be a fine filmmaker, melding the line between fact and fiction, force-feeding his audience with a slighted version of the truth, but proclaiming that people can make their own decision.
If you have read any of Coulter's material you will find underneath the shock, some fundamental truths. She points out that liberals will attack with name-calling and half-truths like, "Rumsfeld lied," "weapons of mass destruction," and "support the troops, not the war."
This sums up many of your columns: blanket statements of liberal rhetoric. Coulter is angry, as we all should be. Terrorists invaded OUR country, hijacked OUR planes, and attacked OUR buildings and killed OUR citizens. Yeah, I guess that wasn't an act of war.
Let's just agree to disagree. I have read Zornick's columns all year long now, and always enjoy the opinions of all parties. Keep up the fight, liberal.
