Opinion Page Biased

Letter to the Editor

I am a very concerned student here at UB. Reading the Spectrum is one reason why I enjoy Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays more so than the other days of the week. I enjoy the sports coverage and being the politically minded person I am I always look at the Opinion section, even though more often then not I disagree.

That is the problem. I'm not a Journalism student but I believe journalism is supposed to be balanced. Of course, the writers in the opinion section are entitled to their opinion but there is a lack of balance the paper shows in only having writers with a liberal point of view write in their opinion section. George Zornick, Ben Cady and Samantha Roth are all examples. They are obviously passionate about what they believe and I can respect that even if I have no respect for the ideals they present. It is scary that only that one side is presented.

Being fair, The Spectrum has kindly posted two of my responses last semester opposing liberal views, but the constant pounding of the left without a counterbalance of the right in the Opinion section is not very fair to the more conservative students. You know what I mean, some one who would talk about not killing babies, about preserving the sanctity of marriage, about crusading for a just cause, about pointing out the inherent hypocrisy of the left, as Ms. Roth so kindly pointed out about the right, about how people around the world need things much more than we do in this fat and bloated country. If our worst problem is not being able to get a new couch, our money is better spent in places where school is a luxury and freedom a dream.

I understand this is the State of New York and this is a university, but there is a good amount of people who fall on the right side of the political spectrum that would like balance out of the paper that they pay for.

This is not a rich Republican who is asking for more representation. I am not rich, nor a Republican. I am the son of an enlisted military man with only limited health care who works 60 hours a week to create a wonderful home for me and my family and a mother who took up school bus driving so we could play hockey. I am a member of that class of people, the lower middle class, that Ms. Roth claims is suffering, and I am asking for more representation for conservatives in the paper.
