Thank you, The Spectrum

A reflection of my time at the UB Spectrum

I first heard of The Spectrum when a guest speaker, Matt Parino, visited my COM 101 class after I transferred to UB. Right away, I knew I wanted to be a part of it, so I decided to reach out — and from the beginning, I was welcomed.

My experience as a Copy Editor has meant more to me than expected, and part of that came with long nights. After my classes and research lab, I’d head straight to The Spectrum, spending at least 12 hours on campus. But Amy, our Managing Editor, and Izabella, our Editor-in-Chief, made those nights feel lighter, with lots of laughter and food runs in SU. I’m also grateful for my UB Spectrum friends — Nadia, Alyssa, Emma and Jacob — for their kindness. I feel lucky to have been surrounded by such intelligent, hardworking people.

Before this, I never really felt like I was a part of something in college, but The Spectrum gave me a place that felt bigger than just myself. I discovered a love for journalism I didn’t know I had through writing, editing and publishing and found a community along the way. More than anything, it has been an honor to read the incredible work of everyone around me.

Thank you for giving me something I’ll carry with me long after graduation.
