Back To Reality

Like many other UB students, the women's tennis team traveled to Florida over spring break, but they were there for three non-conference matches, rather than the sun and partying like most of their fellow students.

The women were able to dominate their non-conference competition in a three-game sweep of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Tampa and Dayton to improve their record to 7-4 (0-2 Mid-American Conference) over the break.

But now the break is over, and the Bulls must resume their conference schedule this weekend with trips to Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.

Buffalo has been woeful in MAC competition, losing every match since an April 6, 2001 defeat of the Akron Zips. Since then, Buffalo has lost 27 consecutive MAC contests, losing games by a combined score of 161-15.

So, it's time to let the good times roll again in MAC play against Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. today in NIU. Buffalo will also play Western Michigan in the Broncos' house at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

To combat their conference foes, Buffalo will hope to conjure up some of their spring break magic where they kicked off their winning steak and came home with a 7-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Bulls rolled in the singles matches, winning all six in straight sets.

Their second of three wins came over Tampa. In the doubles competition, the Bulls took two of the three contests. Enthusiastic Onessa Williams, who saw her first action of the trip at number six singles, was able to pick up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brittany Johnson for her first singles victory of her UB career.

UB completed their three-match spring break trip with a 5-2 win over Dayton. With that victory Buffalo improved to 7-4 on the year, making a perfect 3-0 record in Florida.

The Bulls rallied to win this match with five of six singles victories, taking all but the fifth match. Miglena Nenova took the third game of the first singles match to notch a 6-3 victory over Erin Kirkland in first singles. In winning she continued her dual match streak to 11 on the year.

UB now must come back down to earth and get ready for the conference part of their schedule, which promises to be much more challenging then their spring break trip.

The Blue and White will try to snap their conference losing streak with matches at NIU and WMU Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 1 pm.
