I am writing in response to the letter about the fee increase ("Wasteful Student Association Did Not Deserve Fee Increase," Oct. 4). I did not approve of the alleged ways the students' money was being put to "use" last year. However, I do not believe that this should serve as representative of how all monies are spent.
It is understandable to feel that one has better things to do with $79.75 than to throw it away on what could possibly help people's future careers or help promote unity amongst students, but to put a little perspective into it, a person working minimum wage could earn that much money working less than 15 hours a week without taxes.
Although only 17 percent of the student population voted, it is wrong to say that the reason why that number is so low is due to students being "uninformed." The trend is easy to see whenever there is a public vote of the student body the turnout is usually a low percentage of the population.
I am not currently part of a club or any association on campus nor do I frequently attend campus events, so I technically don't directly benefit from the mandatory fee. But as Pauly said in "Rocky IV," "I'm the un-silent-majority." Those who really cared voted to keep the fee mandatory, plus the $10 increase. I voted to keep it mandatory and it looks like the people have spoken.
