Senate elections next week

Elections for the Student Association (SA) Senate will take place next week at the same time as the Referendum on the Student Activity Fee in the Student Union.

On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students will be able to vote for the two parties that will make up the Senate. Comprised of 12 representatives, six that live on campus and six that represent commuters, the Senate holds several important responsibilities that govern the SA.

Similar to the U.S. Senate, the SA Senate controls the fiscal policies and monetary uses of SA. According to the SA Constitution, the Senate also has the power to decide which groups are recognized by the SA, as well as to review all the operations by student groups and to recognize new clubs.

Running to represent the on-campus students is the Bull-Moose Party, whose members are Kevin Selig, a junior environmental design major; Amanda Jonas, a sophomore undecided major; Josh Sommer, a sophomore business major; Jordan Fried, a sophomore business major; and Dan Hains, a freshman undecided major. Nita Soma is said to be running, but information on her academic standing could not be found.

Opposing the Bull-Moose Party is the New Perspective Party, whose sole candidate is Shanita Mitchell, a senior psychology and social sciences interdisciplinary major.

The race for off-campus representation is between the Birthday Party, which is comprised of Patrick Stahl, a senior business major, and Nader Jamal, a junior undecided major.

Opposing the Birthday Party is the UB Access Party, whose members are Hassan Farah, a sophomore; Nicole Mutignani, a sophomore undecided major; Muhamed Hamza, a sophomore psychology major; and Kevin Louimarre, an undecided major. Yael Goldman, a senior English major, is running without a party.

A representative from the Student Association's Election Committee said that one of the candidates is potentially ineligible to run, but would not comment any further.
