Rockets nudge BullsO swimmers in close meet
Continuing their tough road stint throughout the entire Mid-America Conference, the women's swimming team lost another close meet Saturday afternoon as the Bulls fell to Toledo, 157-137. The Bulls took first place in six of 16 events but couldn't muster up the points needed to pull out the victory at the end.
The Bulls continued to have success in the 400-free meter relay. Buffalo swept the Rockets to take all three places in the event. The first-place team for the Bulls was comprised of freshman Samantha Palma, junior Meghan Lafferty, senior Kahla Walkinshaw and senior Frances Stephenson. They finished in a time of 537:95 while the second Buffalo team finished just a few seconds behind them at 543:22.
Sweeping in not just the relay but individual events as well, the Bulls would capture all three top spots in the 400-meter intermediate. Freshman Jessica Ballard captured the top spot to earn nine points for the Bulls with her finish in 4:40.24. Ballard was followed by teammates freshman Kimberly Dale and senior Eugenie Viale, who finished in 4:40.56 and 4:51.58 respectively.
The freshmen continued to shine for the Bulls as Palma captured a first in the 100-yard butterfly. Palma fought off Toledo's Kyle Gamelier with a time of 59:37 to Gamelier's 59:85. Palma would fall short of another first-place as she earned a close second in the 50-yard freestyle. Toledo's Elizabeth Hinkleman finished with a time of 24.66 just past Palma who finished in 24.99. Freshman Ashley Schaffert earned a second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.55.
The Bulls also captured a second and third in the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Rachel Sorg finished second for the Bulls only .47 behind Toledo's Shannon Hazelton who finished in a time of 59.08. Buffalo junior Cassondra Oliveri finished third in a time of 61:08.
Buffalo returns home to host St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Nov. 15 in Alumni Arena at 6 p.m.
