Xun Liu Wins Second Term

Liu Beats Halfhill For GSA Presidency; Wang, Salunkhe Keep Seats

Xun Liu, a doctoral candidate in political science, won his second term as President of the Graduate Student Association Thursday, defeating challenger Jennifer Halfhill.

Liu collected 258 votes to Halfhill's 157 votes. The election drew 431 graduate students.

Shaokang Wang and Amol Salunkhe retained their seats as vice president and treasurer. Both elections were uncontested.

In his platform, Liu said he was a fiscally responsible president who raised conference funding and academic development services while holding the line on the mandatory student fee.

He promised to devote his second term to providing better technical support for graduate students and increasing the level of community in the graduate schools.

Halfhill, who served as chair of a major geography student group, promised to increase communication within the GSA.

The uncontested elections for vice president and treasurer drew several non-votes and abstentions. In the treasurer election, 101 students either did not vote in the category or voted to abstain rather than cast their ballot for Salunkhe.

Graduate students voted online at the Graduate Student Association Web site from April 13 to April 15.
