In the March 24 issue of The Spectrum, Justin Martin, President of the UB College Democrats, was quoted in the article "Bake Sale Incites Protest," saying the College Republicans had "made a fool" of themselves by holding what many thought to be a "racist" bake sale under the guise of an anti-affirmative action demonstration.
What Justin Martin failed to mention was that the College Republicans were scheduled to debate the College Democrats on the issue of affirmative action on Wednesday at 10 a.m. as an appetizer to the J.C. Watts-Kwesi Mfume debate. The College Democrats backed out. I would hate to make assumptions on why the College Democrats backed out, for such assumptions would be childish. However, I want Justin Martin to publicly explain why the College Democrats backed out.
Furthermore, I would like Justin Martin to work with Matthew Pelkey, president of the UB College Republicans, to reschedule a date in which we can debate a wide range of issues in an amicable manner. We College Republicans are strong in our convictions, as evidenced by Monday's "controversial" bake sale. It would be nice to see our friends on the other side of the aisle show the same character and conviction. We may indirectly get people who were not interested in politics to become interested as well. If people are interested, they get to the polls. It is in the best interest of both Democrats and Republicans to get people to the polls.
What do you say Mr. Martin?
