Tennis
The UB women's tennis team came home from Binghamton with a split as the team downed the Binghamton Bearcats 6-1 but fell to the Siena 4-3 in the second game of the day.
Against Binghamton, the top duo of Kristen Ortman and Miglena Nenova led the charge for UB as the Bulls swept the doubles matches. In singles play, UB took all but one game against the Bearcats. The lone loss was by Kristen Ortman as she fell in the No. 1 singles match to Lya Kushnirovich 6-2, 6-2. Singles winners for UB included Nenova, Katrin Fischer, Michelle Kollarova, Lisa Wittman and Erica Zielinski.
In a tight match, which saw Siena hold off the Bulls 4-3, Siena took two tiebreakers at number one and number three to take the match. Nenova and Zielinski won their matches in singles play while the Bulls once again took the doubles matches taking two matches out of three. UB is now 4-1 in dual meets this year. Their next action is at 2 p.m. in Niagara on Wednesday.
Buffalo Sabres
Mika Noronen posted a shut out in his first start between the pipes this year as Buffalo rolled past the Calgary Flames 2-0. Buffalo wasted no time as Alex Kotalik scored the opening goal on an assist by Chris Drury 1:33 into the game. That would be the only goal they would need as Noronen shut down the Flames, stopping 20 shots.
Miroslav Satan tacked on an insurance goal assisted by Rory Fitzpatrick at the 19:59 mark in the second period, putting the Sabres up 2-0. Buffalo is now 2-3 overall and is sitting at fourth place for points in the NorthEast Division.
