Don' t get me wrong, I feel bad for all the students who had their parties broken up by the police on Halloween weekend, but the attitude taken by some when they get punished after breaking the law and university policies is ridiculous.
Jennifer Tuttle calls herself a student leader but throughout the entire article her she refuses to take responsibility for her actions, instead giving excuse after excuse about why she is being made an example. Jennifer, you are not being made an example; you are paying the price for breaking the lease you signed when you decided to live in the apartments - which an educated student leader would have read - as well as for breaking the law. The last time I checked, hosting a party where alcohol was present and available to minors was illegal no matter where the booze came from.
In addition, Tuttle's ignorant approach to this situation isn't fooling anyone. Not only should her comments insult the intelligence of the typical student, but Tuttle has also served on the University Alcohol Review Board as an SA representative, which she conveniently forgets to mention in the article. If anything, I would hope that a representative of such an organization would be knowledgeable concerning the subject matter that she is discussing.
Regardless, Tuttle says the situation was taken far too seriously because of the positions she and others hold, and I would rebut by saying that, if anything, she was given a much lighter punishment than anybody else that night. From what I am aware of, everybody else that committed the same crime on Halloween was handcuffed and thrown in jail for the night. They will spend quite a bit of time and money in the future in and out of court trying to fix their situations.
Yet, this student representative takes up time and space in the paper whining because she has to serve community service hours. She clearly states, "I don't want anything more. I don't want anything less." I say, give her what she deserves - a pair of handcuffs, and an overnight stay in a luxurious buffalo jail cell.
